God’s Authority and Power

Have you ever been described as someone who “has a problem with authority”? If not, you can probably picture someone like that; a person who doesn’t want to be told what to think, say, or do. For most of us, the sentiment resonates. This world is full of voices, ideologies, and philosophies that confidently, persuasively, skillfully, and sometimes quite subtly, tell us what to do, what to buy, and what to pay attention to. I for one have definitely been frustrated by this and have, in a defiant huff, tried to simply go my own way.

It isn’t possible as human beings for us to avoid coming under the authority of something. Because God created us to be ruled and commanded by Him, it is in our nature to follow and obey. We don’t get to choose whether we are under an authority. We all have the free will authority by God, our Creator, to choose what we follow and bend our lives to. We are always under authority and always being led, a lot like sheep who need a Shepherd. Who or what is it that we are allowing to shepherd us today?

We may live to serve our calling, our work, our community, or our family. We can live to serve man-made ideologies and political perspectives. We can live to serve ourselves, our pride, and selfish indulgence. However, there is a big difference between living to serve God, and living to serve anything else. The first two of the ten commandments warn against idolatry (Deuteronomy 5:7-8). We are not to order our lives around anything before God Himself. Nothing and no one is powerful enough or big enough to handle the weight of our need but God Himself. He knew that, and He calls us to serve Him out of the overflow of energy, focus, and clarity of identity and purpose that comes from our relationship with Him. The sin of idolatry is putting work, people, or ideas in the place of God.

Paul wrote, “See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ. For in him the whole fulness of deity dwells bodily, and you have been filled in him, who is the head of all rule and authority” (Colossians 2:8-10). Paul warns not to allow our hearts to come under the authority of anything but Christ, or the lies that run rampant in the world. We must remember that we are filled in Christ, who has authority and power over every thing, including the things that we may be drawn to, or compelled by or taken with in this world.

I learned the hard way that it’s entirely up to us whether we submit to the authority of Jesus or not. God is the only One powerful enough to overcome all of the horror, darkness, and destruction of our own souls that other options eventually lead to. We are commanded not to have other gods and not to idolize anything but God, for our good. His authority is safe. His is the only authority under which we can have True freedom. Ideologies or other things or people in this world may promise freedom, but all lead to a life of believing lies about who we are and how we were created by God.

How do we know we’ve gone wrong? The best test that I know is to look at the fruit of our lives. Do our lives overflow with the fruits of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23), love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control? For me, if one, some, or all of these is, or are, lacking, that’s a sign to me that it’s time to talk to God about what’s holding me back. It’s time to ask Him where I haven’t feared His authority and power rightly; to ask Him to convict my heart of sin. The sooner we turn to Him in repentance from sin, the sooner we can enjoy His safe, loving authority over our lives.

I spent years thinking I was doing fine, working until 9:00 pm every night, serving work. Agonizing over my performance with dance which was my hobby, serving man’s approval. I thought I was fine neglecting my health, serving my own convenience over stewarding my body well, which is God’s handiwork. Friends, it’s so easy to slip into excuses like, “This is completely normal, everyone does this,” or, “I just am too overwhelmed to think about it right now.”

I now recognize that those are lies and attitudes designed to keep us stuck in bondage; they are not based on what is True. We can know this because the Truth is that we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us (Philippians 4:13). The Truth is that “God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control” (2 Timothy 1:7). And the Truth is that “nothing will be impossible with God” (Luke 1:37)! There is nothing that can separate us from God’s love (Romans 8:38-39); there is nothing holding us back from living a life of fruitfulness except coming under the wrong authority.

Jesus is the Truth; He is the only way out of the entanglement of lies. He is the door (John 10:9); there is no other way, friends. Submitting our lives to the ultimate, loving, all-powerful authority of Jesus is the best thing we’ll ever do in our lives. Jesus has shown us the way, may we walk in it (Isaiah 30:21)! May we enjoy fruitfulness, Truth, and life under the all-encompassing authority of Jesus. Amen.

And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age” (Matthew 28:18-20).

“All things have been handed over to me by my Father, and no one knows who the Son is except the Father, or who the Father is except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him‘” (Luke 10:22).

All About Trust

Especially in this new season of big changes for the better, I’m running into a continued, daily confrontation: trusting God. I’ve touched on trust in Connection to Jesus and Do You Still Trust Me?, but I want to dive even deeper today. The side effects of not fully trusting God for safety, acceptance, or power to fend for myself if/when needed got me into the biggest rut yet in my life. It got to the point where I wasn’t able to be present or enjoy anything because I was constantly on alert for the next threatening thing. Without actively trusting God, I chronically expected to have to defend myself at all times. It left me paralyzed, sometimes literally.

Being in this state of mind is not healthy for any human being. I wouldn’t want anyone to experience such an underlying sense of fear. I can say from experience that the only thing that Truly, with a capital “T,” counteracts that fear is trusting Jesus. Not just saying we trust, but actively turning from the direction we’re heading, and trusting Jesus.

We are commanded, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths” (Proverbs 3:5-6). God doesn’t demand this because He wants dominance, but because it is actually the best thing for our well-being. While He is Sovereign and does have power over us, He wants real, loving relationship with us. Only God can strike that balance well with us because He will never use His power to our detriment. God is worthy of our trust.

The topic of trust is timely for me once again because I’m about to embark on a new adventure in my life, which I’ll be announcing here at midnight next Thursday. (Don’t miss it!) God is doing big things! But in being given and entrusted with new things to steward, God is now requiring a new level of trust in Him from me. There’s no way I can do what I’ve been given if I can’t trust Him well.

Trusting God well is something I simply couldn’t do until very recently. In these last 2.5 years, God has used difficulties to transform my heart. I now see that I needed to be broken in new ways in order to give the Lord room to make way for deeper trust in Him. I needed to be transformed before I could be entrusted with what the Lord wanted to give me; what He’s now given me. He didn’t force the change, He patiently waited until the right time and gave me an ability to trust Him in ways I hadn’t before. “For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven:” (Ecclesiastes 3:1). His timing is always perfect!

Part of my battle with control was wanting things to happen NOW, to be done now, to be realized now. I spent a lot of time and energy trying to make things happen that I now can see I wasn’t ready for. I couldn’t handle the things I wanted if I couldn’t trust God well.

God is a Good Father, and He doesn’t lay unfit burdens on us (Matthew 11:29). He knows us fully and intimately, He knows what He’s made us for and what we are ready for. Rest assured friends, He is working in you and that whatever He has for you to do next, He will bring it about at the right time.

When we trust Him with our lives, He’ll make sure we’re ready for whatever may come. May we trust the Lord, today and every day. Amen.

but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint” (Isaiah 40:31).
