God’s Authority and Power

Have you ever been described as someone who “has a problem with authority”? If not, you can probably picture someone like that; a person who doesn’t want to be told what to think, say, or do. For most of us, the sentiment resonates. This world is full of voices, ideologies, and philosophies that confidently, persuasively, skillfully, and sometimes quite subtly, tell us what to do, what to buy, and what to pay attention to. I for one have definitely been frustrated by this and have, in a defiant huff, tried to simply go my own way.

It isn’t possible as human beings for us to avoid coming under the authority of something. Because God created us to be ruled and commanded by Him, it is in our nature to follow and obey. We don’t get to choose whether we are under an authority. We all have the free will authority by God, our Creator, to choose what we follow and bend our lives to. We are always under authority and always being led, a lot like sheep who need a Shepherd. Who or what is it that we are allowing to shepherd us today?

We may live to serve our calling, our work, our community, or our family. We can live to serve man-made ideologies and political perspectives. We can live to serve ourselves, our pride, and selfish indulgence. However, there is a big difference between living to serve God, and living to serve anything else. The first two of the ten commandments warn against idolatry (Deuteronomy 5:7-8). We are not to order our lives around anything before God Himself. Nothing and no one is powerful enough or big enough to handle the weight of our need but God Himself. He knew that, and He calls us to serve Him out of the overflow of energy, focus, and clarity of identity and purpose that comes from our relationship with Him. The sin of idolatry is putting work, people, or ideas in the place of God.

Paul wrote, “See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ. For in him the whole fulness of deity dwells bodily, and you have been filled in him, who is the head of all rule and authority” (Colossians 2:8-10). Paul warns not to allow our hearts to come under the authority of anything but Christ, or the lies that run rampant in the world. We must remember that we are filled in Christ, who has authority and power over every thing, including the things that we may be drawn to, or compelled by or taken with in this world.

I learned the hard way that it’s entirely up to us whether we submit to the authority of Jesus or not. God is the only One powerful enough to overcome all of the horror, darkness, and destruction of our own souls that other options eventually lead to. We are commanded not to have other gods and not to idolize anything but God, for our good. His authority is safe. His is the only authority under which we can have True freedom. Ideologies or other things or people in this world may promise freedom, but all lead to a life of believing lies about who we are and how we were created by God.

How do we know we’ve gone wrong? The best test that I know is to look at the fruit of our lives. Do our lives overflow with the fruits of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23), love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control? For me, if one, some, or all of these is, or are, lacking, that’s a sign to me that it’s time to talk to God about what’s holding me back. It’s time to ask Him where I haven’t feared His authority and power rightly; to ask Him to convict my heart of sin. The sooner we turn to Him in repentance from sin, the sooner we can enjoy His safe, loving authority over our lives.

I spent years thinking I was doing fine, working until 9:00 pm every night, serving work. Agonizing over my performance with dance which was my hobby, serving man’s approval. I thought I was fine neglecting my health, serving my own convenience over stewarding my body well, which is God’s handiwork. Friends, it’s so easy to slip into excuses like, “This is completely normal, everyone does this,” or, “I just am too overwhelmed to think about it right now.”

I now recognize that those are lies and attitudes designed to keep us stuck in bondage; they are not based on what is True. We can know this because the Truth is that we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us (Philippians 4:13). The Truth is that “God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control” (2 Timothy 1:7). And the Truth is that “nothing will be impossible with God” (Luke 1:37)! There is nothing that can separate us from God’s love (Romans 8:38-39); there is nothing holding us back from living a life of fruitfulness except coming under the wrong authority.

Jesus is the Truth; He is the only way out of the entanglement of lies. He is the door (John 10:9); there is no other way, friends. Submitting our lives to the ultimate, loving, all-powerful authority of Jesus is the best thing we’ll ever do in our lives. Jesus has shown us the way, may we walk in it (Isaiah 30:21)! May we enjoy fruitfulness, Truth, and life under the all-encompassing authority of Jesus. Amen.

And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age” (Matthew 28:18-20).

“All things have been handed over to me by my Father, and no one knows who the Son is except the Father, or who the Father is except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him‘” (Luke 10:22).

Abide in His Love

Have you ever had a hard time letting something you did go that bothered you? It’s been a week like that for me. I have, over and over, let myself down. I’ve come from a poor attitude. I’ve had a lack mindset. I’ve felt an entitled spirit, on edge about everything, like I just can’t take another disappointment.

It’s cut off many connections, closing off opportunity for relationships to grow, all because I didn’t give the fear over to God before it took root in my spirit. The worst part of it was, I struggled to see it was happening in the moment. Once I did see it, I struggled to let it go. As I’ve felt this way many times in my life, I’ll guess that I’m not the only one who’s experienced this.

The whole be-transformed-by-the-renewal-of-your-mind thing (Romans 12:2) is really hitting home for me right now. I need to be renewed, and I know it. But, I can’t do it on my own; I need God to transform me. We cannot change our hearts by ourselves, we have to lay it all down before God and ask Him to change us by His grace.

I need to be reminded that I am completely reliant on God’s help to have a perspective of love and security in the Father’s love, not fear. In 2020, I wrote a blog called Compassion and Resting in Jesus. In times like this when I struggle, I’m reminded and take comfort in the fact that Jesus’ compassion and forgiveness is far bigger than the struggle. He offers us all a place of peace and compassion. Jesus said, “Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me” (John 15:4). We are called—even commanded—in this passage to abide in Jesus. Abiding involves letting go of control and trusting Him and His love for us. “There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love” (1 John 4:18). We read here that love and fear simply don’t cooperate. Jesus is the only way beyond the grip of the spirit of fear.

Jesus said, “I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing” (John 15:5). Jesus also refers to Himself as the Way, the Truth, and the Life (John 14:6). Abiding in Him involves staying close to Him, understanding and trusting His heart, will, and character, and relying on Him to lead us in all truth and life.

Despite how much fear or shame may sway us, we have no reason to doubt our identity in Christ, or that we are loved by Him. Jesus said, “As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love” (John 15:9). Once we abide in Jesus, His love becomes ours. As we abide in Jesus, we can show and share His love, which is the most healing, restorative, and pure love there is. Abiding in Him is the best thing for us—that’s why He commanded it! It allows us to bear fruit; perhaps the most foundational fruit of life is that of love. “So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love” (1 Corinthians 13:13).

My hope for myself, and for you, my friends, is to abide in Jesus and His love anew today. May we see His incredible love with fresh eyes, and see a little further just how deep and wide it truly goes! His love is far more powerful than even the most deadly spirit that would grind our lives and our love to a halt. His love is the only place of safety, and is the foundation of a fruitful life. May we let the Truth, that we are loved by Jesus and bought by His precious blood, reign in our hearts, minds, and spirits today. Amen.

Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God. So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him” (1 John 4:15-16).

Whoever keeps his commandments abides in God, and God in him. And by this we know that he abides in us, by the Spirit whom he has given us” (1 John 3:24).

These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full” (John 15:11).
